NW is an open house for contemporary art and film on the quays in Aalst. We commission, develop, and present new work through exhibitions, screenings, and public events. In close collaboration with artists and local communities, we create a programme that is locally embedded and globally engaged, an active space for experimentation, dialogue, and collective imagination.

Dress to Kill – Public Programme

around the exhibition by Pauline Curnier Jardin

The public programme accompanying Pauline Curnier Jardin’s Dress to Kill moves fluidly between registers, from carnivalesque spectacle to critical cinema. The series begins on Halloween with an intervention by Princess Arendcarnaval, followed by rare screenings of the mythopoetic films of Le Nemesiache, cult classics ranging from Brian De Palma to Virginie Despentes, and activist queer […]

Varda

Agnès Varda (1928–2019) was one of the most idiosyncratic and influential voices in film history. Often called the grande dame of the French New Wave, she was in reality always just a step aside—or forward. Self-taught, photographer, filmmaker, essayist: Varda blended fiction and documentary, personal observation and social insight, with a rare lightness and sense of humor.  Her films are guided not by theory or dogma, but by curiosity: about people, about time, about how seeing can also be thinking. She did not confront the spirit of the times by explaining it, but by questioning it. This program invites you to (re)discover her work as a cinema of attention, freedom, and gentle radicalism. In the sections that follow, we delve into key works that make her unique vision tangible.

Microhistories about NW, Aalst, and the Dender region

In 1974, the Centre for Societal Renewal is founded in Aalst, later giving rise to NW. The centre brings together organisations and voices that explore alternative ways of shaping society. The Info~Angel working group plays a central role in this. Their name reflects their goal: to provoke and raise awareness, like a bee’s sting. With […]

Kitchen Stories

Cooking and eating as connection, ritual, and dialogue

During the renovation of NW, the emphasis was on creating a central space for cooking. The open kitchen is a shared space, linked to everything happening in the building and the community in and around NW. The open kitchen brings people together, each with their own story.  In our open kitchen, cooking is a thoughtful […]
