All filmsFrom the Fringes: Between Brazil and Belgium. Henrique Alvim Corrêa
Laurens Dhaenens and Fernanda Pitta
Henrique Alvim Corrêa is an artist who challenges art historians to reconsider the discipline. His career was short and characterized by brief stays in Paris and Brussels. Most of his work is lost or destroyed and among his most important work there are no paintings but illustrations and erotic drawings in which he plays with a wide range of classical art historical motifs. This lecture / discussion will focus on what can we learn from figures like Alvim Corrêa who have been relegated to the fringes of the canon. What can they reveal about the story of art history and its representation at official institutes? What methodological issues do they present? And how can we return them to the foreground? The lecture will elaborate on the curators’ work process (between Belgium and Brazil), on the choice to involve contemporary artists and to work with Netwerk Aalst and the Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo.
