With Mariinka, director Pieter-Jan De Pue returns to eastern Ukraine, ten years after his debut The Land of the Enlightened. This new documentary, which will have its world premiere as the opening film of CPH:DOX, follows the lives of young residents of the frontline town of Mariinka in the Donbas region over a period of a decade.
What begins as a portrait of growing up in wartime develops into a poignant chronicle of a generation shaped by conflict. A talented boxer becomes a military paramedic, a teenage girl smuggles goods across the front line to survive, and two brothers end up on opposite sides of the front. Through letters, video calls and intimate observations, De Pue shows how political fault lines cut right through families and identities.
Mariinka is a film about loyalty and loss, about bonds that endure — or break — under the pressure of an endless war.
