Hannah travels with her husband and their sixteen-year-old, non-binary child, Frances, to Amsterdam, where her father Jim lives. For Frances, Grandad ‘Jimpa’ is a hero: a man who is openly queer and embodies Amsterdam’s vibrant queer nightlife. Frances therefore decides that they want to stay with Jim for a year. 

For Hannah, this is less straightforward. She knows her father as a charming but unpredictable man and fears that Frances has an overly romanticised view of his ideals. As grandfather and grandchild get to know each other better, a clash emerges between different generations, ideas about freedom and the question of what it means to give a child the space to discover themselves.
