In The Seventh Seal, Knight Antonius Block returns to Sweden after years of fighting in the Crusades. On a deserted beach, he is met by Death, who has come to claim him. Block challenges him to a game of chess, in the hope of buying time and finding answers about God, faith and the meaning of life.

Set against the backdrop of a medieval landscape ravaged by the plague, Bergman combines profound existential questions with moments of humour, tenderness and light-heartedness. The image of the knight playing chess with Death has become one of the most iconic scenes in film history. The Seventh Seal is both a medieval drama and a poignant film about doubt, mortality and the search for meaning.
