Opening I’m fine, Maturing

Melissa Mabesoone

On Friday evening, 27 February, we look forward to welcoming you to NW for the opening of I’m fine, maturing by Melissa Mabesoone.

18:00 Doors open, welcome

18:30–21:00 Kitchen Stories, café

19:30 Welcome + Performance by Crywanker and Goldscammer

Before the opening, we are introduced to the inhabitant of the teenage bedroom: Crywanker — a melancholic teenangel, forever doomed. His room is lined with posters of his idols. One of them, Goldscammer, literally steps out of the wall. “Call me a lonesome cowboy, who can’t pick up when you call / I’m too busy interacting with the faces on my wall.” Crywanker performs his own songs, interwoven with tracks by Debutante King. In the music, his loneliness and longing to be seen resonate: “Like dad’s favourite sportscar that tells him he exists, I’m your favourite popstar, I’m Taylor’d Swift.”

20:00 Screening: Maturation Station, cinema

In a world of hissing pipes, fluorescent light, and swarming shrimp, Theo finds solace in the quiet of a laboratory. A shrimp breeder with a vivid imagination, she prefers the company of animals to that of people. But when she and her colleagues rehearse speeches for an international conference about a violent technique that turns female shrimp into blind reproductive machines, her carefully constructed inner world begins to unravel. While caring for her sister’s child, Theo starts to question her own place within the surrounding systems. Maturation Station is a feminist, absurdist short film about the fluid boundary between work and private life, care and reproduction.
