In 2012, the City of Aalst commissioned an urban renewal plan for ‘Kern Rechteroever,’ where NW is located. Architecture Workroom Brussels with 51N4E – and supported by Wim Embrechts, University of Antwerp and Technum – presented the concept of Common Ground, a shared infrastructure to connect different worlds and dynamics in the district through three pillars: the productive city, the provisioning city, and a strong residential fabric. More than a decade on, the largely unimplemented plan continues to inspire. What might revive its potential today?
