In Bugonia, Yorgos Lanthimos plays a treacherous game with truth and delusion. When a CEO is  kidnapped because her captors are convinced she is an alien, the film comes dangerously close to conspiracy theories and contemporary paranoia. Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons navigate razor-sharp between seriousness and absurdity, while the viewer is constantly left wondering: who is actually crazy here?  

Lanthimos does not force us to choose who is right, but shows how conviction has become more important than truth. Bugonia is as witty as it is uncomfortable — and above all, it is a film that activates your distrust, even towards yourself.
