Dreams (Drømmer) is not only the final instalment in Dag Johan Haugerud’s trilogy about intimacy (Sex, Love, Dreams), but also the gentle centrepiece of a quest for self-understanding. The film opens up a world in which 17-year-old Johanne tries to hold on to her first great love by writing down her thoughts, as if writing were the only way not to lose a feeling that is bigger than herself.
But dreams do not want to be locked away. They want to be shared, heard, seen. Dreams shows how desire finds its way out, how fantasy and reality intersect, and how your view of someone else always becomes a view of yourself. Dreams is thus a film about first love, but equally about the power of imagination: how dreams can confuse us, lift us up, and ultimately connect us.
A warm, clear ode to the intimate chaos of being young: this is what dreams can do.
