Enzo

Robin Campillo

Enzo is an intimate, sensual coming-of-age film about a 16-year-old boy from a wealthy family. Enzo defies his middle-class family’s expectations and begins training as a bricklayer. There he meets Vlad, a charismatic Ukrainian colleague who turns Enzo’s world upside down.

The story behind the film is at least as moving as what can be seen on screen. The film was conceived by French director Laurent Cantet (Entre les murs), who died of cancer shortly after writing the screenplay. His close friend and regular co-screenwriter Robin Campillo (120 BPM, Eastern Boys) took over the direction out of friendship and as a tribute. The film went into production just a few weeks after Cantet’s death.

Campillo made Enzo in his own way, but remained faithful to the sensitivity and personal undertones of Cantet’s original idea. The result is a film about social alienation, sexual fluidity and the vulnerability of touch – where a simple hand on a chest says more than an explicit scene ever could.
