Het geheim van de meesjes

Antoine Lanciaux

This Belgian-French stop-motion animated film is made entirely from paper cutouts. The story follows Lucie, a curious ten-year-old girl who unravels a medieval mystery during her vacation in a village. With the help of birds, a dog, and a goose, she discovers archaeology, family secrets, and friendship, with a touch of adventure.

Lucie spends a few days on vacation in the village of Bectoile. There, her mother Caroline leads the excavations in the ruins of a medieval castle. While Caroline and her cheerful colleague Pierrot search for an ancient crypt, Lucie discovers that her mother grew up in the area and that there is more than one secret to be uncovered. Guided by a special pair of titmice and helped by her new friend Yann, Pierrot’s eager dog, and a goose with a mind of its own, Lucie digs for answers. A mysterious key in a nest, the remains of a ruined mill, an old “wizard” in the forest: each clue brings the cheerful gang closer to the truth.

The Secret of the Chickadees shows that you can go a long way with crafting, because the film is made entirely from paper cutouts. Add a dash of Scooby-Doo and Indiana Jones, and you get a creative youth film about summer friendships, the fun of archaeology, and the importance of family.
