With Marty Supreme, director Josh Safdie delivers an exuberant, unpredictable comedy that cheerfully defies the conventions of the classic sports film. At its centre is Marty Mauser, a shoe salesman who becomes a table tennis sensation. However, this is not so much thanks to talent alone, but mainly thanks to bravado, opportunism and an unerring instinct for self-promotion.
Timothée Chalamet plays Marty as a charming but decidedly obnoxious antihero: arrogant, resourceful and always on the lookout for the next deal. What begins as a rags-to-riches story gradually derails into a series of side paths, bizarre encounters and absurd twists and turns. The film visibly takes pleasure in losing its thread, and that is precisely where the fun lies: each detour yields new energy and memorable scenes.
Beneath the frenzied humour and visual bravura lies a sharp portrait of a culture in which everything is for sale: talent, love, even identity. Marty Supreme is at once a sports film, a satire and a feverish character study: a madcap tour of the back rooms of ambition and capitalism, where winning is rarely the end goal and the show always goes on.
