Together with the OFFscreen Film Festival, we are screening Iván Zulueta’s Spanish cult classic Arrebato. OFFscreen is Brussels’ high mass for cinema off the beaten path—from cult classics to contemporary genre gems and artistic cinema that moves outside the mainstream.  

This year, OFFscreen is looking at Spain and all the beauty that moves just below the radar there. Together we are showing Arrebato, the first and last feature film by Iván Zulueta (1943–2009). The film is considered the most ambitious and personal work in his oeuvre: a kind of self-portrait in the form of a vampiric film about addiction, cinema, and self-loss. Zulueta was a cult figure of the Spanish underground and a key figure in La Movida Madrileña, the explosion of artistic freedom in post-Franco Spain. He worked mainly outside the commercial circuit, with Super-8 and 16mm, and made films that balance experimental cinema, pop culture, found footage, and personal obsession. Zulueta’s own struggle with heroin and his fascination with image and time are deeply etched into the film, giving Arrebatodie the rare intensity of a work that is not only about obsession, but also driven by it.  

In Madrid’s underground scene, we follow José Sirgado, a B-horror director trapped in a web of heroin, failed relationships, and creative exhaustion. His path crosses that of Pedro, an eccentric young filmmaker who obsessively makes Super 8 films. What Pedro captures on film turns out to be more than an experiment: his camera seems to literally extract something from those being filmed. Image becomes a gateway, cinema an abyss.  

Between smoky nights and claustrophobic interiors, Arrebato blurs the line between creation and destruction. Zulueta blends vampirism, surrealism, and queer desire into a fever dream that is at once gothic horror, diary, and avant-garde manifesto. With its narcotic rhythm, ghostly colors, and obsessive repetitions, the film presents cinema as an ecstatic but dangerous addiction.  

More than forty years after its original release, Arrebato is being rediscovered thanks to this 4K restoration. This is a milestone in Spanish film history and a radical cult film that continues to seduce, unsettle, and haunt. A unique opportunity to experience this “hallucinema” on the big screen.
