Les Glaneurs et la Glaneuse (2000) is one of Varda’s most poetic and socially engaged documentaries. With her characteristic curiosity, Varda explores the French countryside to follow “gleaners”: people who collect leftover crops, waste, or forgotten objects for reuse. Sometimes out of necessity, sometimes out of idealism, always with inventiveness and attention to detail.
