In her adaptation of Wuthering Heights, Emerald Fennell opts for a distinctly stylistic and psychological reinterpretation, in which desire, power, and self-destruction take center stage. Whereas earlier adaptations emphasized the harsh natural environment and social exclusion, Fennell shifts the focus to the toxicdynamics of obsessive love and the performativity of class and gender.

Her Heathcliff is not merely an outsider, but a figure who becomes aware of his position and manipulates it. His relationship with Cathy takes on a sharper edge: seductive, yet permeated by control and a mutual urge for destruction. Cathy herself is less a victim of circumstances than an accomplice to her own downfall, caught between desire and social ambition.

Dialogue and imagery are used to build tension between what is shown and what simmers beneath the surface. Glances, silences, and carefully staged momentsreveal more than words. The film exudes a sense of controlled excess: emotions are not suppressed, but magnified until they become almost unbearable.

This version of Wuthering Heights is not a subdued tragedy, but a scathing dissection of desire and social masks. Fennell depicts a world in which love does notpurify, but corrupts—and in which beauty is never separate from something unsettling.
