Based on research in post-colonial practices in the field of fashion and textiles, Benjamin Mengistu Navet has been investigating his own Ethiopian back- ground through pattern making and combining traditional with industrial techniques. Navet was born in Addis-Ababa, Ethiopia, he grew up in France, and arrived in Belgium to study Fashion Design at La Cambre (Brussels) and Textile Design at the KASK School of Arts (Ghent).
Navigating between different approaches of textiles and fashion, he passed by Margiela’s knitwear studio in Paris, such as the TaDA residency in Switzerland, where he was working closely with textiles industries in order to develop projects. Back in Belgium to work on several projects between Brussels and Flanders as well as exhibitions with KOMPLOT, The Constant Now, and at Ballon Rouge in the context of the Black History Month, he has more recently collaborated with choreographer Stanley Ollivier and the Sculpture Garden Biennale Geneva, invited by swiss Artist Axelle Stiefel for vorstellen. network.In parallel, he has developed a long term collaboration with Stanley Ollivier choreographer, for whom he has been doing scenography projects.
Since sept. 2023, he has been starting a new project based that questions the heritage of the afro american musician Julius Eastman, by creating a PRACTICE where he tries to weave the music of Julius Eastman with the artist Emile Van Helleputte and Choreographer Stanley Ollivier. This project is created as a platform of reflection, that takes shape in 3 month of residency in Cas-Co Leuven, a project with 019 ghent, the school Stroom Leuven, and Cas-co Leuven of creating a flag with 80 students, and that will ending in June 2025 of his first Solo-Exhibition in Kunstraum Remise, a contemporary art center in Bludenz, Austria. This exhibition will be worked in collaboration with the textile company Getzner.
