Bert Danckaert worked over six years on a doctorate thesis for the Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp and The University of Tilburg. This research was presented in two publications: one as a visual essay with photographs acting as protagonists and one in the form of a novel.
A basic theme in his work is the everyday space that surrounds us all and how such spaces throughout the world are beginning to increasingly resemble each other. His focus is on inadvertent space: recognizable places without specific meanings, non-places such as car parks. Theses are non-urban areas usually unnoticed by passers-by, yet the attention of the photographer is drawn to an aesthetic value that lies in the areas of colour, random elements… Bert Danckaert brings those non-places into an organized and structured depiction.
