The work of Robin Vanbesien straddles the intersection between film, painting, installation and writing. His recent work is informed by the notion of ‘solidarity poiesis’ that arises from an argument for a poetics that aims to transform social justice through new sustainable self-organized infrastructures. As part of this research trajectory, both the film Under These Words (Solidarity Athens 2016) (2017) and the publication Solidarity Poiesis: I Will Come and Steal You (2017) take their vantage point from the popular assemblies in Athens, addressing the multifaceted ideas and prospects of this grassroots movement such as prefiguration, self-governance and abolition democracy.
Other recent film projects include assembly for an Oresteia (2016), Gravidade (2015), what must one know (2014). Recent solo and group exhibitions include a.o. OMONIA, 5th Athens Biennial (Athens, 2016); Foreign Places, WIELS (Brussels, 2016); citizen without qualities, Drop City (Newcastle Upon Tyne – Düsseldorf – Brussels, 2016); Gravidade, Lumiar Cité (Lisbon, 2015); lighting the throat = lighting the throat, Objectif Exhibitions (Antwerp, 2014). In 2016 Vanbesien founded the platform for artistic production and reflection timely.
