After Sex is Love is the second part of Dag Johan Haugerud’s trilogy about modern intimacy. In this middle part, the focus shifts to chance encounters and thoughtful conversations about love, sex and romance – often set on the night ferry to Oslo, where strangers find each other through dating apps or a glance in the twilight.
The focus is on Marianne (Andrea Bræin Hovig), a single urologist who cannot let go of an encounter with a geologist, and her colleague Tor (Tayo Cittadella Jacobsen), who explores his own desires when he meets a psychologist (Lars Jacob Holm) again. Haugerud does not provide clear-cut answers, but allows relationships, courtship and care for one another to unfold slowly in scenes carried by an excellent cast.
The Oslo skyline and the sweeping views from the ferry make the city a character in its own right. With long, concentrated dialogues, nocturnal cityscapes and the warm orchestral jazz of Peder Kjellsby, Love becomes pure urban poetry: a thoughtful, mature film that invites the viewer to reflect on love themselves.
