In this harrowing documentary, Iranian-French filmmaker Sepideh Farsi follows young Palestinian photojournalist Fatma “Fatem” Hassona, who is trapped in the hell of Gaza, for a year. Through more than two hundred video calls, an intimate portrait emerges of a woman who, amid bombings, famine and loss, continues to smile, take photographs and cherish her dreams.

The film shows how Hassona gradually weakens, but also how her strength and pride shine through time and again – in conversations with her family, in a rare bag of crisps, or in the hope for a future without war. Farsi, who recognises a kindred spirit in Hassona, builds a monument to one young woman and, at the same time, an unforgettable face of the Palestinian genocide.

Put Your Soul on Your Hand and Walk makes the maddening powerlessness palpable: the distance between the filmmaker who travels and documents, and the woman who is trapped in Gaza and loses everything. A heart-wrenching film that brings the viewer closer than is bearable.
