Kar-Wai

Master of melancholy and visual poetry

Wong Kar-Wai is one of the most influential filmmakers of his generation. His striking visual style, emotionally charged stories and the way he manages to depict themes such as love, loneliness and impermanence make him the ‘loudest voice’ of Asian contemporary cinema outside Asia.

Ever since his first films, Wong Kar-Wai has collaborated with Christopher Doyle for cinematography. Together, they create the signature visual images that make the films so recognisable: saturated colours, dreamy cinematography and unusual camera angles. Interventions that enhance the aesthetics and emotional impact of the films.

At the core of Wong Kar-Wai’s films, visual poetry and human emotion come together. Stories of lost love, unfulfilled desires and the inexorable passage of time. His characters are often in a state of introspection, caught up in the complexity of human relationships.

Spread over two months, NW will show four iconic films recently restored by the Eye in Amsterdam and The Criterion Collection. Introductions will delve deeper into the films.
